The Vibrator Play
by Sarah Ruhl
1980. The dawn of electricity. Dr. Givings believes that female hysteria is caused by congestion in the womb and has innocently invented a vibrator to cure it. A repressed Mrs Daldry enters his surgery one autumn afternoon and hears “If we can invite your juices downward, your health will be restored.” As if an orgasming Mrs Daldry topples a domino, the entire cast fall; into longing, discovery, laughter. It starts with a machine. It ends with an awakening; be not a stranger to yourself.
